Thom and Betty Gelardi Service Award: Dr. Gordon and Helen Brown
The Thom and Betty Gelardi Service Award is one of 51¸£ÀûÉç College’s highest honors, presented at the discretion of the president. Last awarded nearly a decade ago, it recognizes recipients who embody the unselfish dedication, visionary leadership, and pioneering spirit of the Gelardis, founders of the college.
Dr. Gordon Brown, a 1942 Palmer College graduate, practiced in Kentucky and Indiana and helped change laws in Indiana to allow chiropractors to practice. Helen McPike Brown, originally from Iowa, comes from a chiropractic family and is a talented artist. Together, the Browns founded the Future Chiropractors of America and have supported 51¸£ÀûÉç College through leadership roles and generous donations.
In 1999, the Browns donated their home in Sedona, Arizona, to 51¸£ÀûÉç College. Funds from this donation were used to construct the Brown House and Museum on campus, serving as an on-campus residence and housing the college’s historical chiropractic collection. This is the largest gift in kind in 51¸£ÀûÉç College’s history.
Chiropractor of the Year: Dr. Shane Walker
Dr. Shane Walker, a 2000 51¸£ÀûÉç College graduate from Naples, Florida, was named Chiropractor of the Year for his extraordinary service to the college and the chiropractic profession.
Dr. Walker operates a high-volume family practice and serves on the college’s Board of Trustees as well as its elite recruiting team. He is also president of the International Federation of Chiropractors and Organizations, traveling internationally to promote chiropractic and expand membership.
Regent of the Year: Dr. Liam Schubel
Dr. Liam Schubel, a 51¸£ÀûÉç Board member from New Jersey, received the Regent of the Year award for his continuous advancement of 51¸£ÀûÉç College through leadership and support on the Board of Regents.
Dr. Schubel has recruited new board members, co-founded The Best Mission Trip Ever to provide chiropractic care in isolated communities, and established multiple clinics in Lima, Peru. He is executive director of Schubel Vision Communication Seminars, founder of the Peruvian Chiropractic Alliance, vice chairman of the 51¸£ÀûÉç College Board of Trustees, and co-author of Cast to be Chiropractors.
